Lunch with Owen
09.08.2012
After the pilot "restarted" the plane, because a warning light came on, we were an hour late to SF. Owen was waiting for me and we quickly ordered hamburgers and chatted about the last year. Owen lost a lot of weight with the "slow carb" diet, which sounds like a total drag to me, but I guess it works for him. He routinely eats black beans for breakfast...
I was starving and the hamburger had an avocado on it. Yum.
I got black on the plane and headed for Seoul.
Leaving SFO was kind of the worst part. In Toronto, I waited until the very last second to get on the plane, I couldn't bring myself to do it. I knew that soon they'd be announcing my name, so I forced myself to do it on my own. San Francisco was much worse. I got on the plane quickly, but as I watched the familiar mountains fade into the distance, it broke my heart. My weekly Mountain View hiking club meetings came back to me and I realized that I wouldn't set foot on this continent for another whole 365 days. Then, I thought back to all the crazy things that happened to me in the last year and how long and terrible it seemed to me. Even though there's no way that this year could be worse, I still cried so much into my Singapore Air hot towel, that a flight attendant brought me an extra one almost as soon as the seat belt sign went off.
