Coit Tower adventure

I forget why we went to San Francisco, but we went to the top of Coit Tower and took some photos of the city.

Maker Faire

We saw a bunch of cool stuff at Maker Faire. I rode a solar powered carousel and saw a life-size mouse trap game.

There was also a bunch of people doing weird things with lights in the dark.

Oh and I almost forgot the clothes swap. I got some sweet pants, a jacket AND a dress. Which was awesome, because I completely wore them right out during my time in California.

As you'll recall, for reasons that will go unmentioned again in this blog, I had to come across the country with only a carry-on, so my wardrobe was severely limited.

Needless to say, I was very very happy to find this table of free things.

Fancy sushi dinner

I forget what the reason was, but we had a fancy dinner out at Mitsunobu.

Delicious.

We walked through the beautiful campus of Stanford University to get there. Then we took the CalTrain back.

Monterey has SEA LIONS

Owen likes the golf course, and I love the sea lions. We both liked Monterey for different reasons. You have to pay $15 or something to take a car ride in the golf course area. I didn't really understand it, but Owen seemed to.

We saw a bunch of the sea lions basking in what was left of the sun on the rocks before heading into town for the sunset and dinner at a cool Mediterranean style place with an unbelievable mosaic fireplace.

Lunch stop at Pigeon Point

We had a nice lunch here that I had packed in the morning. You can even see the hot mustard on my sandwich in the photos!

I loved the wildflowers here, it was a nice picnic spot.

Famous boardwalk

I was astounded that a place like Santa Cruz still exists in the 21st century. Alas, only in California.

Walking around the boardwalk is like stepping back in time 100 years... kind of... you know what I mean.

We're heading down to Half Moon Bay

The next day, Owen wanted to take me to Monterey.

On the way there, we saw a sign for Half Moon Bay and I had to stop because of the Cat Empire song that I love. So here are the pictures of that.

Owen also slipped and fell right on his butt. I laughed really hard, but he didn't find it funny.

First day in San Francisco

Not gonna say I loved it, it was windy and cold. You know the cliche.

We walked around a lot, went to the beach and had to have some sushi on Judah Street. I was really tired on the train ride home.

Eating noodles in Mountain View

So the first thing I wanted to do after getting to Mountain View was to leave Mountain View.

We went to San Francisco on Saturday, but stopped for lunch downtown before catching the CalTrain to the city.

Amtrak is pretty fast

It didn't take long to get to the other side of the country. There weren't a whole lot of stops, so we went pretty quickly. Did I mention the ticket was only about $200??? Crazy cheap!

Usually, I had two seats to myself so I slept well. All of the old people (who comprised most of the train) went to the back of the train where they could knit and watch the sncenery through the panoramic windows.

Whiskey on the steps

I ate breakfast with Vernon and then we immediately went downtown to catch the train. We had some whiskey on the steps of some sort of giant library to celebrate.

Switching trains in Chicago

It took all day and all night to get to Rochester, New York, where I was asked for my proof of citizenship. I was freaking right out, because they had already taken some brown people off of the train and were talking to them on the platform.

Imagine I got deported again?! Anyway, I believe I kept my cool enough so that the border guard didn't even ask me any questionds. I watched the holocaust movie Shoah all day that day. (It's a long one)

I had a couple of hours to kill, so I walked over to Greektown and scored me a delicious gyro at Greek Islands. I also stocked up on food for the next three days of train-ing around I'd be doing soon! I remember there were a ton of mennonites in the train station. Is that because they aren't allowed to fly?
